What's the difference between petrol in a diesel vs diesel in a petrol?

Petrol in a diesel engine is the more serious scenario. Diesel fuel lubricates the fuel pump and injectors — petrol strips that lubrication and can cause metal-on-metal damage within minutes of running. Diesel in a petrol engine is less immediately damaging but still requires a full drain and flush before the vehicle is safe to drive.

In most cases where the engine hasn't been started — or was only run briefly — a professional drain and flush is sufficient to prevent lasting damage.
